Learn more about Hilltop School.
Hilltop School is a community filled with life-long learners who strive for personal growth, academic excellence and act as responsible citizens who contribute to an ever changing world.
The District employs a rigorous curriculum including coursework, co-curricular activities, and board approved educational experiences. Through an ongoing review and commitment to the mission of meeting the diverse and unique needs of our students the curriculum in each core discipline is guided by a unifying framework that justifies and gives direction to daily instruction. Students engage in conferencing, peer review, claims-evidence-reasoning, inquiry-based learning, real world experiences and compelling questioning throughout their courses. Understanding the importance of developing skills in critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, decision-making, risk-taking, inventiveness and time management, students at Hilltop have the unique opportunity to participate in related arts courses twice a day including library, technology, physical education, Spanish, art and music.
The Home-School Association sponsors various enrichment clubs including TREP$- a project-based learning program that teaches kids in grades 4-8 how to start their own businesses. Other after school enrichment programs include courses taught by our teachers and outside organizations.
A privately operated before and after school program for students in PK-8 during the hours of 7:30 AM- 8:15 AM and 3:15 PM-6:00 PM and from 8:00 AM- 3:30 PM on Teacher In-Service Days is offered at Hilltop School.
Our facilities serve as a source of pride and supports our goal to create and sustain a safe, secure learning environment that is equipped to deliver a 21st century instructional program. Recent upgrades include LED lighting, low profile security vestibule, HVAC Control upgrades, renovated basketball court, upgraded wireless access points, and repaving of parking lots.
School safety is not only a priority, but a shared responsibility. Our district works collaboratively with the local Police Department through regular meetings, a shared agreement regarding security cameras and the hiring of a Class III Officer. Regular audits of both the physical environment as well as our safety and security plans allow for the continual implementation of best practices. Security cameras, safety trainings, safety teams and monthly security drills guide our safety and security protocols.
Dedicated Chromebook carts in grades 2-4 has expanded technology integration and collaboration. Students at Hilltop acquire the essential information technology skills needed in order to grow and develop into lifelong learners, global digital citizens and empowered innovators of the 21st century through Technology classes. Students use Flipgrid to create book reviews, are introduced to coding and utilize a variety of applications and technologies in music and art. We have expanded Google Classroom as a learning management system to simplify creating, distributing, collaborating and sharing feedback with students in real time. A vital component of our technology programs is the development of a digital wellness initiative that incorporates digital citizenship, digital etiquette and digital safety.
Hilltop School offers an Integrated Preschool that supports young learners between the ages of 3-5. Our preschoolers are immersed in developmentally and academically appropriate activities that build social-emotional competence and other important school readiness skills. Unique to our preschool is that our learners participate in Hilltop Elementary School's related arts classes which include art, library, and physical education. Additionally, our young learners are fortunate to be a part of the character education program at Hilltop Elementary School where everyone contributes to the school community. In addition to half-day and full-day options for preschoolers with an identified disability. Our goal remains the same - educate the whole child and enjoy the experiences at an elementary school.
Hilltop School has a dedicated team of professionals that work together to meet the needs of our pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade students. Our young learners are immersed in programs that will prepare them socially, emotionally and academically for the world beyond the Mendham Borough School District. Our fourth graders can choose a brass or orchestra instrument to play, with lessons given weekly in a pull-out setting. A unique feature of Hilltop School is our use of a community-building program called Responsive Classroom. All 15 classes have a daily morning meeting where students gather to greet one another, share news, and prepare for the day ahead. The Responsive Classroom approach is an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on the strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning. This along with our character education program, helps to promote caring, resilient and respectful students. Hilltop School is a great place to learn and grow.
