At Leonardo Elementary School we place value in the academic and social development of each child. Partnering with our diverse community, we provide personalized learning experiences to create opportunities for each child's growth. Marrying a neighborhood schoolhouse culture to the best teaching practices of the 21st century, our professional and support staff is committed to innovative and strong delivery of instruction in all content areas.
Our teachers differentiate instruction and modify/adapt curriculum units to provide an interdisciplinary program. We use a workshop based literacy program that integrates the main components of Reader's Workshop utilizing authentic literature and informational text, word work and guided reading during instruction. Formal writing instruction is through the workshop model of instruction. Leonardo utilizes the district adopted Go Math program and STEMscope to address the NGSS.
Students at Leonardo School participate in after-school activities including Fitness Club, Technology Club and play production.
Leonardo Grade School offers before and after school learning opportunities that provide targeted instruction to bolster student achievement. The Before/After School Academy is also offered for students in grades 3-5 for approximately 12 weeks.
Teachers are engaged in purposeful and personalized professional learning experiences throughout the year. Within the district, structures have been put in place to support teachers as they participate in professional growth opportunities such as independent studies, personalized reflective practice experiences, job-embedded professional learning, micro-credentialing and teacher-facilitated conversations as they work towards individualized professional learning goals. All teachers also participate on an ongoing basis in Professional Learning Community work, which is spearheaded by the leadership of designated Learning Design Teams within each building. Learning Design Teams lead building-level experiences, through a PLC-like structure, that stimulate professional dialogue to inform decision-making and increase instructional capacity to positively impact student outcomes.
There are many special educations services offered at Leonardo along with a comprehensive I&RS Program. A full time Social Behavior Support Specialist and LDTC provide counseling/group sessions for students in need.
The school nurse runs CATCH Club Fitness programs two mornings per week for various grades. The students have Physical Education one time per week and engage in Teacher Directed Physical Education on a daily basis. A daily breakfast program is offered. YMCA conducts weekly clinical counseling at Leonardo Grade School.
Leonardo has a very strong PTA that works tirelessly to provide students with amazing extra-curricular experiences. In conjunction with the Principal, they host events and meetings to increase the home-school connection.
Leonardo Elementary School is located on the bay shore of Middletown Township, New Jersey. One of twelve elementary schools in our district, Leonardo is home to a full day kindergarten through 5th grade school with approximately 310 students.
The Middletown School District continues to put student and staff safety as its top priority. We work collaboratively with police and other emergency management personnel to develop and carry out our strategic school safety and security plans and ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiency in allocating security resources. Student social and emotional learning is a focus at every level in order to promote a positive and safe school climate. Our programs and practices include Responsive Classroom, character education, individual and group counseling by mental health professionals, student and staff training, crisis management teams, partnerships with community mental health organizations and other efforts to promote student self-regulation, social awareness, interpersonal skills and responsible decision making.
District initiatives based on technology and STEM are supported through daily innovative practices within our classrooms. Student driven hands on activities, that include coding, robotics, engineering and design, inspire students to demonstrate creativity, explore 21st century topics, generate projects of interest and develop deeper understandings that prepare them for future academic success. Leonardo is equipped for 21st century learners. Technology, such as SMART Boards, Chromebooks, iPads, and document cameras are utilized to engage learners and enhance learning. Students in grades 3-5 each have been assigned a Chromebook and actively work in a 1:1 digital environment on a daily basis. Beyond the classroom, Harmony offers students opportunities to deepen their understanding through the Technology club.
Leonardo Elementary School has a full time kindergarten program. Students in Kindergarten learn through interactive lessons that will help build a strong foundation for future academic success.
We believe that a student's education encompasses more than just academic success. Our students' social emotional health as well as the school's positive culture & climate impact our students' success. Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness. As we move towards full adoption of Responsive Classroom philosophies and practices, our current focus is on mastering the Morning Meeting component. Students' academic success is credited to students, teachers and parents working together as a cohesive group. Students in grades 3-5 each have been assigned a Chromebook and actively work in a 1:1 digital environment on a daily basis. The special subjects provide the children many motivating learning experiences. Art classes study the products of the masters and engage students in activities of individual artistic expression. During physical education the children stretch, run and jump to help develop young bones and muscles. Vocal and instrumental music classes provide the opportunity for students to develop a love of music, and students receive instruction in World Language to acquire basic knowledge of the Spanish language as well as the rich culture.
