Learn more about Old Turnpike School.

Mission

Old Turnpike School (OTS) serves as a middle school for grades 6-8. The staff at OTS focuses on preparing each child to become self-sufficient, to strive for academic excellence and to be prepared for future educational and life experiences. This is provided through a departmentalized format as well as having time in the day for enrichment.

Academics

OTS remains committed to the whole child. We offer accelerated classes Mathematics in grade 8. We also have classes in Visual Arts, Music, Band, Digital Literacy and a STEM program. Our Gifted and Talented program called “Aspire” is offered to all grade levels. Students in all grades have a 1:1 use of Chromebooks. Our teachers search for a wide range of field trips to enrich their classes.

Teachers

The staff at OTS has an ongoing professional development schedule starting in August and continuing throughout the year. Teachers take ownership in learning and monitoring their growth through their professional development plan and professional learning communities. A number of staff members are working toward higher degrees in their field of study, and attend state and national conferences and workshops.

Supports

OTS has several layers of support services for our students. Our Child Study Team works closely with teachers, parents and students with disabilities. We offer in-class support, and a resource classroom. Other students are assisted with a 504 or I&RS support. Every student has a period of enrichment to work individually with their teacher or with student mentors.

Health

A social emotional learning committee was formed and meets throughout the school year. The Committee is a group of staff members collaboraing to identify concerns, set priorities and design solutions in regard to the SEL health environment of the school.

Parents

Tewksbury has a very supportive community. The PTA is involved in providing volunteers and financial support for a number of class and school activities. The Tewksbury Education Foundation sponsors artists-in-residency programs, assemblies, mini-grants for teachers, funding for the STEM program and the 8th gr. trip to Broadway. The Tewksbury Athletic Association provides physical and social growth through recreational sports.

Facilities

Old Turnpike School sits on 11 acres in beautiful Hunterdon County. The main building was built in 1969 with one addition in 1974 and the final addition in 1986. The grounds allow for two softball, one baseball and one soccer field. Additionally, there is room for our Cross-Country team to practice running. We have over twenty classrooms including four science labs, library, computer center and gym.

Technology

Old Turnpike School has a comprehensive STEM and Technology Program.

Early childhood

More

The Tewksbury School District and Old Turnpike School promote an atmosphere dedicated to learning and allowing intellectual curiosity to flourish. The environment must be safe, secure and caring for all students and staff. Tewksbury schools are supported by many community-based groups. The PTA supports teacher’s “Wish Lists”, and provide assembly programs and financial support for multiple school and class programs. The Tewksbury Educational Foundation sponsors artists-in-residency programs to enhance our curriculum in the arts. Additionally they give mini-grants to teachers for a Broadway show, and STEM education for our students.
