All students have breakfast before class each morning. Students have Health/PE and recess on a daily basis with an additional 40 minute period once per week. Students receive Family Life in both 5th and 6th grade. The Lower Township Wellness Committee includes several 5th and 6th grade students on their committee.
The PTA is a very strong and active supporter of all Lower Township Elementary Schools including Sandman. Their fundraising efforts pay for educational field trips, incentives and other activities each year. They also hold monthly events throughout the school year: PTA Meet and Greet, Fall Festival, KISS Dance, Reading Night and the Spring Carnival. Our Food Service Department organizes the annual Family Step It Up 5K Walk/Run. Approved volunteers assist the Sandman teachers on a monthly basis with various classroom activities and programs.
Sandman participates in School Safety Week each year. A safety plan is developed, supported, practiced and instituted by our security team. We also meet with our School Safety Team three times per year.
All 5th and 6th grade students receive STEM instruction and Computer Education.
Various anti-bullying messages were reinforced throughout the year by a variety of activities and projects discouraging negative conduct while promoting and rewarding positive behaviors in all school settings including a Week of Respect, Violence Awareness Week and weekly Caught in the Moment awards. The Nature Center of Cape May, the Wetlands Institute, North Cape Nursing Home, and the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority supported instructional programs with materials and presenters. The Career Day program, developed by the school guidance counselor, invited dozens of speakers to present to our students and introduce them to the endless opportunities available in the larger community.
