Learn more about Upper School.
At Upper School, students continue their study of literacy and mathematics through Reading and Writing Workshop as well as Go Math. The middle school mathematics sequence culminates with Algebra I in eighth grade. The Social Studies program extends students' understanding of citizenship by promoting student led initiatives related to democracy and service learning. Approaches to science instruction are hands on and inquiry based, allowing students to engage in content just as âÂÂscientistsâ do. Students also have the opportunity to continue with their choice of World Language programs - French, Italian, or Spanish. Related Arts instruction culminates with the districtâÂÂs theme-based âÂÂRelated Arts DayâÂÂ, which builds on classroom learning concepts from throughout the year.
Upper School offers many opportunities for students to participate in clubs and activities. Students in grades 6-8 participate in âÂÂEducate to Innovate (E2i)âÂÂ, a course that focuses on integrity, leadership, and innovation. Examples of this include student leadership activities, community service opportunities, and skill building through academic and artistic competitions. A large percentage of the school also participates in band, glee, and school musicals. Students are also given opportunities to participate in various competitions including the Spelling Bee (Grades 3-8), a Speech competition (Grade 8), and GATE (Gifted and Talented). GATE students participate in the Future City competition and the Invengineering Expo.
Upper School recognizes that healthy students make better learners, so we provide an environment that supports our students' wellness, physical, social and emotional needs. The district initiative is to promote the health and well-being of the whole child. The nurse and physical education teachers work in collaboration to develop and deliver health education and promotion of student well-being. A Certified School Nurse is at the school to provide on-site health services including treatment of minor ailments, managing chronic health cases, offering family support and education, and providing information on current health issues and trends. Upper School hosts annual health related assemblies and physical activities to promote the health and well-being of the whole child through positive character development and making good choices. Some examples include: Week of Respect, Anti-Bullying and Field Day.
