Learn more about Deerfield Township School District.
Deerfield Township Elementary School is a community of students, parents, and staff dedicated to the development of every individualâÂÂs desire to learn and achieve. à Collectively, we provide a safe, supportive environment that promotes curiosity and a life-long passion for learning. Our school is committed to cultivating and maintaining a positive school climate and culture in order to promote academic growth and student development.
Our district is part of the CRHS Curriculum Consortium to insure our students are prepared for high school. à The consortium attempts to align curricula when possible to ensure that students are âÂÂon trackâ with the sending districts to reduce instructional gaps for students that transfer from school to school within the consortium. à We use Journeys and Holt McDougal for ELA and Go Math and Big Ideas for Mathematics. à We offer Accelerated Math for grade 7 as well as Algebra I. in grade 8. à In addition to the core academic areas, students receive instruction in the following special areas: Art, Computers, Health/PE, STEM, Performing Arts and Spanish. à We also have a full day Pre-K program that services all township students including in-district pre-school disabled students.
Our school offers Choir, Academic Lab, Yearbook Club, instrument lessons, Drama Club, Safety Patrol, NJHS, Student Council, Lego League, Fun Zone, softball, basketball, volleyball and more.
Our Academic Lab offers targeted, small group instruction for gr. 1-8 to help students meet/exceed grade level expectations in ELA and Math. The YMCA offers a before and after school care program at our school for all students.
As a form of job-embedded professional development, teachers work collaboratively in PLCs to build capacity and increase student achievement. à We have an instructional coach and Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction as resources to all staff. à The instructional coach, Supervisor, and teachers with expertise in particular instructional strategies provide professional development to other staff members. à Our district collaborates with the CRHS Consortium to broaden the PD available and offer teachers the opportunity to collaborate with teachers from other districts. à We are proud of the fact that more than a third of our teaching staff members have MasterâÂÂs degrees.
Our I&RS Team and CST support students who are having academic, behavioral or social difficulties. We also have a guidance counselor and social worker to assist students in the acquisition and development of social skills. Our staff members provide classroom based character education/health lessons in all grade levels. Additional services are provided in the areas of behavioral support, speech, OT, PT and SAC. Ã The Sonday System is used in our early childhood BSI program to support students in ELA. Our Academic Lab offers targeted, small group instruction for gr. 1-8 to help students meet/exceed grade level expectations.
A breakfast program is offered to all students. à Our Health and Wellness Committee works to help encourage healthy eating and maintaining an active lifestyle. à We have a Life Skills Curriculum which is delivered to all students in grades K-8. Our school offers an after school âÂÂFun Zoneâ club to promote health and exercise in gr. K-3.
PTO provides activities for our students and their families including, but not limited to: Ã Trunk-or-Treat, school dances, family fun nights, movie night, family paint night, and field day. Our PTO also holds a Winter Gift Shop and a Spring Book Fair in an effort to raise funds and provide students and parents the convenience and opportunity to purchase low cost holiday gifts and books. Ã The Community Fundraising Committee and PTO purchase technology for our school. Ã Our parents attend special school functions such as concerts, STEAM Night and orientation programs. Ã We also offer opportunities for parent involvement on committees and advisory groups (i.e.Special Ed. Parent Advisory Group).
The school has a computer lab, middle school science lab, library, gymnasium and art room. The preschool wing shares its own fenced in play yard. Ã There are also playgrounds, baseball, and soccer fields. Continual improvements in technology include building wide wireless internet access and the infusion of over 300 chromebooks, 7 tablets, 8 Promethean Boards, 2 Active Panels, 6 Interactive Projectors, and 10 digital cameras into classrooms.Ã All computers in the computer lab were replaced during the summer of 2019. Central air conditioning in all areas of the school allows for a more conducive learning environment. Line striping and patching was completed during the past summer and was phase one of a multi-year project. Additional summer projects included HVAC duct cleaning in the library and the installation of new VCT tiles in the art room and gymnasium office. In conjunction with the creation of a security vestibule, safety/security film was installed at two entrances.
Security cameras have been installed in locations both inside and outside of the building to enhance safety and security measures. The multi-year plan for the purchase of additional cameras is nearing completion. The districtâÂÂs website continues to have much value as a source of updated information for all constituents. Visitor procedures, including collecting a visitorâÂÂs license, escorting visitors to their destinations and back to the office to sign-out, and requesting lists of expected visitors during holiday parties and events, increase building security levels. Student drop off and pick up procedures allow for a more structured routine which prevents students from entering busy traffic areas, increases staff visibility, and improves the overall timeliness of the process. The main entrance security vestibule project will soon be completed. The Chief School Administrator and School Business Administrator are both certified as School Safety Specialists through the NJ DoE.
Technology STEM: All students have STEM as a special area class. We also have an after school STEM Club / Lego League.Ã There are chromebooks in every classroom and we are working toward a 1:1 ratio. Grades PK-2 have promethean boards in their classrooms. The Computer Lab and Science Lab have Interactive Boards, as well. More devices and STEM kits/materials are slated to be purchased thanks to a partnership grant with CRHS through Project Lead the Way.
We offer a full day pre-school program and utilize Curiosity Corner for our curriculum.
BlackBoard Connect is utilized to share information with all stakeholders. Student uniforms are required. Students wear navy or khaki bottoms and blue (navy, light blue, royal blue) tops. Ã School spirit wear and sweatpants are permitted on days when students have physical education. Various school spirit and special theme days are scheduled throughout the year.
