Mission

MMS is a community of learners, teachers and parents who seek to create opportunities for student growth. We strive to continually redefine ourselves in order to provide the knowledge, skills and values that students require to be successful learners and leaders in the 21st century. In addition to academic excellence, our school’s mission is to expose students to a variety of cultural, visual and performing arts and to prepare students to be caring citizens.

Academics

Students study language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Students have the possibility of taking high school level Accelerated or regular Algebra 1 as well as Accelerated Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. Students also have the potential to complete high school level 1 & 2 French or Spanish during their three years of world language study. All students have related arts courses in art, design, leadership, human rights, technology, robotics, digital media/broadcasting/photography, game design and music.

Clubs

MMS offers a wide array of extracurricular enrichment programs. School funded offerings include an expansive Peer Leadership Program, Science Enrichment, Yearbook and Math Clubs, a School Musical and a Jazz Band. Additionally, the MMS PTO offers the following after-school activities: Coding, Animatronics, Robotics, Art Exploration, Basketball, Botany, Cartooning, Chess, Debate, Deconstruct, Design Challenge, Jeopardy, Meteorology, Model UN, Public Speaking, Stock Market, and Write Fit.

Programs

Students are able to arrive to Millburn Middle School as early as 6:45 am for Before Care. Before Care runs from 6:45 am to 7:15 am and is a period of time when students can work on homework or talk with other students before the building is open. Teachers are available for after school Extra-help sessions with students each day and there is an after-school homework support program that meets three days per week.

Teachers

Millburn Middle School (MMS) has 115 certified teachers servicing 1170 students in grade 6 through 8. Teachers engage in professional development opportunities both within the school district and at conferences and workshops outside of the district. MMS is committed to a Professional Learning Community (PLC) model with teachers engaging in professional development designed to impact instruction and student performance.

Supports

MMS’s Intervention and Referral Service, Student Support and 504 Committees along with the Child Study Team work to identify students who are academically, socially, emotionally and/or behaviorally at risk; and to develop strategies, supports, interventions and/or accommodations to provide opportunities for these students to reach their full potential. Supplemental instructional opportunities are available during and after school through strategies intervention courses and teacher-help sessions.

Health

All MMS students are scheduled for daily physical education classes as well as a marking period of health education each year. Health units of study include topics in the areas of nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse prevention, reproductive health, mental health, life skills, and safety.

Parents

The MMS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a partnership of parents, teachers and administrators dedicated to enhancing and enriching the middle school student experience by offering activities, programming, equipment and resources supported through fundraising and volunteering efforts. Communication is facilitated, and the school and parents/community are linked through PTO Meetings, a shared calendar, a monthly newsletter, and the school’s website and parent portal.

Facilities

MMS has undergone several facility upgrades over time, most recently in 2009 with the opening of our new wing that includes a Multi Purpose Room, classroom space for Art, Math, Science, LAR and P.E. In addition to our new spaces, MMS has a Library/Media Center, 2 Gymnasiums, STEM Lab and a Historic Auditorium. MMS is an air-conditioned facility that provides a comfortable learning environment.

More

The MMS is organized around the concept of teaming. The 6th and 8th grades have four teams while the 7th grade has three teams. Each grade has a dedicated guidance counselor and teachers on each team have a planning/team period to meet with their teaching colleagues every day. The MMS has a robust music program which includes music classes, instrumental music lessons, and chorus, band, orchestra and jazz ensembles which perform in concerts both in and out of school.
