Learn more about School 27.
Mission: To prepare each student to be successful in the institution of higher education of their choosing, and in their chosen profession. Vision: To be the statewide leader in urban education
School 27 has two 5th grade book clubs which are supervised by the Library Media Specialist. Half of the students in the book club were members when they were in fifth grade. We are happy to have some new participants this year. The books clubs meet during their lunch periods. The book clubs are open to all sixth-grade boys and girls who want to participate. The children are given a choice of books to read. Coincidentally one group is comprised of students who are reading at or a little below grade level and the students in the second group are reading above grade level; so of course, they do not read the same books.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) workplace mentoring program at Wyndham Worldwide Corporation has been successfully matching School #27 students with Wyndham Corporation employees since 2013. The BBBS Workplace Mentoring Program provides School #27 students with the critical skills needed to achieve their full potential through a mentoring relationship with a caring adult role model. By partnering with BBBS, Wyndham has been making an investment in the development and success of the students.
School 27 professional development focuses on aligning the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), resources, and strategies to provide our students with a range of optimal learning experiences inside and outside the classroom. Our staff development is often geared to incorporating higher order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies into classroom instruction. Emphasis is also placed on utilizing data to drive instruction and to support staff in interpreting and modified instruction to meet student needs. In addition, our math and literacy supervisors provide turn-key training to the staff to support district initiatives and programs i.e. Running Record, Wonders, etc. The staff also participates in training and professional development opportunities as they are provided by the district on an ongoing basis.
