TEECS is a tuition-free public school that engages students within a dynamic environment inspired by a love of learning guided by an agreement of common trust.
Thomas Edison Energysmart Charter School (TEECS) presently has Grades K-11. Curriculum in elementary and middle school grades is written by the teachers and is revised every year in the summer. We follow New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and our curriculum and pacing guide is aligned to the state standards. In addition to ELA, Math, Science, Social studies, PE, Art & Music we also teach Computer Literacy, Smart Tech, Character Education, World Languages and Theatre Arts. Advanced Math courses are offered in Grades 5 and up. We use hard copy textbooks for Grades K-2 and electronic textbooks for Grades 3 and up. Students receive homework in core content subjects only. In addition, students have an opportunity to accelerate math courses during the summer under option 2. High school has two tracks to accomplish graduation requirements including College Prep and a dual-enrollment Academy program through RVCC.

TEECS offers Band and String Ensemble, Book Club, Music Production, School Newspaper, Spanish Club, Word Games Club, Math Counts, Middle and High School Robotics, AMC Club, Cooking & Chemistry, Science Olympiad, Model UN, Community Service Club, Creative Writing Club, Drama, EV3 Robotics, Coding Club, Lego Club, Minecraft Coding, Puzzle Club, Turkish Club, Art Club, Arts & Crafts, Board Game Club, Bollywood Dance, Glee Club, Dance Club, Cartooning, Keyboard Club, Kindergarten Sports Club, National Speech & Debate Club, Pottery, VEX IQ and Chess.
In addition to clubs and team activities, TEECS offers Extended Care until 6pm as well as tutoring and Saturday school. These programs are run by our teachers and aides.
TEECS' teachers are provided with a monthly Professional Development Day in addition to other training and seminars offered throughout the year. Some of the teachers and staff participate in the Charter School Conference each year. Other staff members are provided with annual seminars and online training.
Currently Thomas Edison high school enrollment is through 11th grade. The first graduating class will be in the year 2022. The school has a dual STEM and Environmental Science Academy with Raritan Valley Community College. We also offer college courses from NJIT. The high school program at Thomas Edison provides an opportunity for students to develop the skills necessary to compete and succeed today's world. This programs aims to strengthen students technical and academic skills in a STEM and environmental science pathway while attaining both a secondary and postsecondary degree. Students are admitted into the academy program with a pre-requisite of a good academic record, a rigorous interview and an Accuplacer placement test.
At TEECS, Classified Special Education students have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and they receive services, accommodations and modifications as prescribed in the IEP. Typically, most students receive in-class support (ICS) in subjects they need help with. In addition to these services, students receive services in related areas like Speech, Counseling and OT. ESL services are used to develop English language literacy, language, and content understanding for non-native speakers. In ESL teaching, the ESL teacher will differentiate instruction for her English language learners. Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) team's purpose is to effectively collaborate with teachers and parents to develop learning strategies and behavior intervention plans that help students reach their maximum potential. The I&RS Team is committed to assisting general education teachers with learning strategies and behavioral intervention plans to help students reach their potential.
TEECS offers all students breakfast in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. Free and reduced meals are offered. The school's Green Team has created a school garden that produces vegetables that are incorporated into the school meals. All students receive at least 20 minutes of recess a day along with physical education classes. The number of days of physical education a week depends on the grade.
TEECS offers extra support to our parents of students with special needs through our Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG). Meetings are held once a month and are run by our Special Education Department. Parents are encouraged to contact the Main Office if they would like to join the meetings. Parents and staff are also incvolved in our PTO. In addition, TEECS uses PowerSchool and Google Classroom to allow parents real-time access to grades, homework, conduct, attendance, and notes from teachers.
TEECS has been at its new location now for 3 years. The new facility includes two fully-equipped science labs, art room, music room, and gymnasium with locker rooms. This building has air conditioning.
TEECS' security staff include four security guards: two full time armed guards and two armed part-time guards. There are seven various types of drills the school will perform on an annual and/or semi-annual basis. We monitor the security of the students using Netop on our highly secure school network.
TEECS' classrooms are equipped with the latest tools to enhance student learning. Examples include Macbooks, iPads, Chromebooks, smartboards, advanced lab equipment, and digital programs and apps including Accelerated Reader, Think Central, Everyday Math, Harcourt, Pearson, STAR Reader, RAZ Kids, FOSS, Khan Academy, Worldy Wise i3000, Code.org, and Google Classroom. TEECS uses PowerSchool and Google Classroom to allow parents and students real-time access to grades, homework, conduct, attendance, and notes from teachers. We monitor the security of the students using Netop on our highly secure school network.
TEECS' school day begins at 7:50 am and ends at 2:40 pm. Most Clubs start at 3:00 pm and end at 4:00 pm. TEECS offers aftercare until 6:00 pm. Students are expected to adhere to the school uniform policy.
